Some of the science behind the ingredients we use:
1. Vitamin A / Beta-Carotene (Feather, Skin, Vision, Immune Health)
Relevant ingredients:
Carrot powder, pumpkin powder, leafy greens (nettle, alfalfa, wheatgrass)
Key claims supported
References
Supporting context: vitamin A is essential for vision, reproduction, immune function, and epithelial tissue maintenance in birds.
Beta-carotene-rich vegetables such as carrots and pumpkin provide a safe dietary source of vitamin A precursors for birds.
2. Carotenoids (Lutein, Zeaxanthin) and Feather Pigmentation
Relevant ingredients:
Marigold (Calendula), carrot, pumpkin, leafy greens
Key claims supported
References
Birds commonly use carotenoid pigments for coloration of feathers and tissues.
3. Functional Mushrooms (Lion’s Mane, Reishi) – Neuroprotection and Immune Support
Relevant ingredients:
Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
Key claims supported
References
Mushroom polysaccharides such as β-glucans show antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in experimental studies.
Blueberries and Lion's Mane may provide complementary neuroprotective benefits
, with blueberry anthocyanins helping to reduce oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and amyloid formation, while Lion's Mane compounds support nerve growth factor (NGF) production, neuronal plasticity, and cognitive function.
Blueberries and Reishi may act synergistically to enhance antioxidant and immune defenses, as blueberry polyphenols complement the β-glucans, triterpenoids, and other bioactive compounds in Reishi that exhibit immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective activities.
Blueberry polyphenols and Lion's Mane polysaccharides may support the gut-brain axis, potentially fostering a more diverse and metabolically active gut microbiome that contributes to improved neuroimmune function and overall neurological resilience.
4. Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) – Liver Protection
Relevant ingredient:
Milk thistle seed powder
Key claims supported
References
Silymarin derived from milk thistle has antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties widely studied in liver disease models.
Milk thistle is also used in animal feed additives for liver support.
5. Oregano (Carvacrol, Thymol) – Antimicrobial and Gut Health
Relevant ingredient:
Oregano powder
Key claims supported
References
Experimental poultry studies show oregano-derived compounds can affect intestinal health and nutrient absorption.
6. Hibiscus – Antioxidant and Cardiovascular Support
Relevant ingredient:
Hibiscus flower powder
Key claims supported
References
Anthocyanins in hibiscus are potent antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative damage.
7. Nettle (Urtica dioica) – Mineral Density and Antioxidant Activity
Relevant ingredient:
Nettle leaf powder
Key claims supported
References
8. Marshmallow Root – Gastrointestinal Mucilage Support
Relevant ingredient:
Marshmallow root powder
Key claims supported
References
9. Adaptogenic Herbs (Tulsi, Chamomile)
Tulsi (Holy Basil)
References
Chamomile
These herbs show anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and calming properties.
10. Kelp – Iodine and Trace Minerals
Relevant ingredient:
Kelp powder

Biodiversity Bird Blends is dedicated to improving the lives of the animals we keep through whole food nutrition. We rely on the decades of science that has shown us the value of biological compounds in whole food items and the dangers of processed foods. We also rely on experts in avian nutrition who run our formulations and create our innovative products to ensure their safety and benefits for all animals. As both Dr. Crean and Dr. Becker have long said, we want our animals to THRIVE, not just survive.
Note: Our products are only created for birds and should not be fed to other pets.
"I approve and encourage the use of herbal and/or decaffeinated teas for birds. When offered correctly and appropriately, tea can enhance a bird's life by enriching her life experience and introducing additional nutrition. I often recommend various teas to clients. Their use supports many treatment protocols and aid in healing and mental health.”
"Without question, tea has stood the test of time and has had profound impacts on the health of many animals, including humans! It is no secret that there is little research on avian nutrition but, like most other research, the use of studies on other animals and humans give us an idea as to how the compounds in blended teas work. A list of resources, many of which from peer-reviewed scientific journals, continue to showcase the benefits of teas. This list barely scrapes the surface of what we know but it is certainly a good place to start to show how the many different types of teas are beneficial. We have been using animal teas for many, many years with wonderful results and we hope you decide to try them with your own birds."
Jason had sent me two packages of the flower andherb blends to try for our dwarf lionhead rabbit. I've been mixing about atablespoon every other day with her hay pellets, and she really loves it! Shegravitates towards the flower forage over the green forage, but she reallyloves them both. Thank you so much for bringing this healthy diversity to ourrabbit's diet!
I've been using the "taming the flame" tea for my IRN with terrible arthritis, and after 2 weeks she's so much better. I started off with the weakest solution and now she's on the strongest solution. She's leaping from her perch to her "bird on a rock" again, moving around more. And putting herself to bed on her upper perches. She had been waiting for me to put her up there every night at bedtime. She's on no pain meds, And I stopped the LED light while I tried the tea. THANK YOU!!!!
We are a family-owned business in South Florida with a long history in birdkeeping. It has long been our goal to improve the lives of the birds we keep by improving their diet and increasing their enrichment opportunities. We are very pleased to be one of the only bird businesses who actually staff experts in animal nutrition who help us create our innovative products. We work tirelessly to produce high quality products for you and, in turn, support scientific organizations who help birds both in the wild and in our homes. We hope you will take advantage of some of our products and feel good doing so!
